Paper Drops

by Veronica Picone

No suspense
on people’s faces
when the sky darkened.
Rain.
The most normal event
in these troubling days.

I keep walking.
Rain pouring.
Drops…
Not of water
But of paper,
Drops.

Fragile fragments
Of concrete words
that never arrived home.

Written by Veronica Picone as part of Poetry as Commemoration workshops led by Mark Granier in North Wicklow Educate Together Secondary School, Bray in September 2023.

Inspired by the image of documents from the Public Records Office of Ireland raining over Dublin in June 1922 after the destruction of the Four Courts.
