My One Wish
by Jamie Moore
My wish reminds me of the most tasteful
Mouth-watering sliver of the finest meal oozing off the dish.
My wish looks like a courageous and creative being
Squirming and wriggling like a fish.
My wish feels like a million others trying
To escape the guns and bombs.
My wish has a mind of its own, an uncontrollable
Melody waiting to be sung.
My wish is a simple wish for one hundred years
Before and one hundred years to come.
I hope that this and every wish
No matter how big or small
Will matter in this world
My wish is peace, hope and joy
for each and everyone.
Written by Jamie Moore, as part of Poetry as Commemoration workshops led by Terry McDonagh, in Castlerea Community School, Roscommon, in November 2022. Transition Year students were invited to write a poem in response to Terry McDonagh’s poem ‘My Freedom One Hundred Years Later’, written in commemoration of the War of Independence.
