My Kindness

by Nicole McNamara

My kindness tastes like sweets

of love resting on my plate.

My kindness looks like a bunch

of yellow flowers bursting from the ground.

My kindness smells like a scent of roses

lingering all around me.

My kindness sounds like a fun fair

just around the corner.

My kindness fills my heart

accepting the sacrifices

of those fearless soldiers

one hundred years after the war.

Written by Nicole McNamara, as part of Poetry as Commemoration workshops led by Terry McDonagh in Castlerea Community School, Roscommon, in  November 2022. Transition Year students were invited to write a poem in response to Terry McDonagh’s poem ‘My Freedom One Hundred Years Later’, written in commemoration of the War of Independence.
